WHAT TO SEE AND DO WHILE STAYING IN OUR HOLIDAY COTTAGES IN BERKSHIRE
in this county would not be complete without taking in the 3 main attractions of the county; Windsor Castle, Eton College and of course, Legoland for the children.
For the more unusual head towards Wantage to visit the Uffington White Horse. It is the best known of several horses carved into the chalk hillsides dating back to the Iron Age. Wantage is where St George is meant to have killed the dragon and is also the birthplace of King Alfred the Great of the burnt cakes fame.
This county also boasts a wine estate near Twyford called the Stanlake Park Wine Estate. It is a fairly large estate with some 30,000 vines on 25 acres and around a dozen different varieties of wine are made, as well as two liqueurs. It is open to the public where you may enjoy some wine tasting and take home a bottle or two for yourself.
It is also home to over 15 golf courses and a golf school and as many horse riding stables and clubs. So there is plenty to do besides from the walking and cyling opportunities that exist. However, an important route in the county for walkers is the Ridgeway National Trail. It starts in Avebury and the path wends its way across the chalk downs through at least three more hill forts, and passes within feet the White Horse at Uffington, mentioned earlier.
If you are wanting to do something different on your farm holiday, why don't you try the "Walking with Wolves" tour organized by the UK Wolf Conservation Trust. You can buy a special "walking membership" at the headquarters, and as long as your children are 12 and over, you can have an experience of a lifetime by walking with a wolf pack through the Pennsylvania woods.
There are many farms in Berkshire, many of which are only a day trip away that offer activities for children. Bucklebury Farm Park in Bucklebury, Reading is one such farm.
