Villa Romana - A Farmhouse Villa in Tuscany

Villa Romana a farmhouse villa in Tuscany

The Farm: Villa Romana is a working farm of 15 acres surrounded by unspoilt countryside. It is an organic farm consisting of olive groves, vineyards, a forest for walks, chickens and a vegetable garden and orchard supplying the farm with fresh produce. On the property is an under-ground wine cellar built into the hill opposite the farmhouse. Here you can sample some of our boutique wines from our vines or buy some oilve oil, at the farm shop, which is pressed on the farm.

Accommodation: Your accommodation at Villa Romana is in the tower of the house that overlooks the surrounding hills and the olive groves. The accommodation has high-level finishings with natural limestone floors and bespoke kitchen cupboards. Villa Romana sleeps 2-4 with a main bedroom on the mezzanine level with a double bed. The lounge/dining-room has a sleeper couch for additional sleeping capacity. There is a bathroom in the tower and a full kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier. Guests have the full use of the garden and farm to explore, including the forest in front of the house. Between the tower and the house is a semi-enclosed loggia that is perfect for all-year-round al fresco dining. It is 40sqm in size with a twelve-seater stone table and wrought iron chairs for inviting any guests over for a meal, if you desire. There is also a built in fireplace inside the loggia that can either double up as a fire for roasting chestnuts over in the winter, or for barbeques in the summer.

For rainy days at Villa Romana there is a television in the tower, a music system and CDs for you to watch. There is also a small library and some board games and jigsaw puzzles for when the children are bored.

The Area: The Casentino Valley is a land of castles that cradles the Arno River, the very same that flows through Florence just 50 kms away from the villa. The villa is ideally situated to take day journeys to Cortona, Florence, Arezzo, Sienna and the Chianti region, and Urbino in Le Marche and parts of Umbria. Withing the Casentino are some wonderfully historical places such as Poppi and its castle, Camaldoli and La Verna.

The Casentino, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Forest Park stretches for over 36,000 hectares and consists of century-old forests firs, beeches and chestnuts and Europe's first nature reserve, the Sasso Fratino reserve, is located within the Park.

Activities: The area around Villa Romana is perfect for walking. With the National Park and many areas to walk, including our farm you will be spoilt for choice. There is also the opportunity for horse riding, with 2 horse riding schools in the area. There is a golf course just outside Poppi for those of you who like your golf and would like to take in a game or two. Visit the many historical towns and castles and don't forget to visit the many wineries in the area. It is a great spot for photographic opportunities and capturing those quintessential shots of Tuscany.

Restaurants: The villa looks on to the small hamlet of Chitignano, famous for smuggling in times past. Chitignano is only 5 kms by car and there are two good restaurants within close proximity. One is in the hamlet itself and the other at the foot of the hill before one's ascent into the village. These are:

* OSTERIA PANTA REI LOC. LA CASA 70 • 52010 CHITIGNANO • +39 0575591500

* RISTORANTE LE TRE FONTANE (SNC) V. VERNA 58 • 52010 CHITIGNANO • +39 0575596717

Within a couple of kilometers is Rassina where you can find further restaurants and a Pizzaria. Rassina has a weekly market, as does Chitigano, so there is always good shopping within close proximity.
