adding fresh herbs to the soap

I am attempting to make soap for the first time and wish to utilize fresh herbs, etc. Would fresh mint leaves work? Or a special green plant that is currently growing in our pond that is an extremely small plant leaf about the side of a pencil point. Thought this would add an excellent exfolliant feature to my soap bar and something from our home. Thank you for your great site. Maggi
