can i grow more beetroot leaves after the tops have been cut off the stalks .

I was given one beetroot. I decided to use it as raw grated beet in salads. I now discover it is loaded with nutrients when raw.

I almost threw away the top of it that still had stalks on it but it had no leaves on it. I have popped it in a glass with 3 cm of water .... on my window sill hoping more leaves might grow??

I can find out myself but someone may know this answer already. Carrot tops will produce leaf so why not beetroot ??? Thanks from Cathy in NZ

Cathy, I am sure that you will have a few sprouts coming from your beet top, but I doubt that it will grow full leaves like carrots do. I am guessing that at best you will get a crown of very thin, leaf sprouts no more than an inch or so before the beet withers and dies.

But then I could be completely wrong. It is not something I have tried myself.

So I guess we will just have to wait for you to complete the experiment and hopefully you will be able to satisfy all our curiosities!

There are 2 leaves growing at present. I shall leave them alone and see if more grow ...! How does one insert a photo in here? WATCH this space. Cathy

Hi Cathy,

Glad to see such progress! I have been traveling so have only picked this up now. So I take it that there are more leaves now.

You can insert a photo through the website. I pick up all the messages and filter them, so when you send it through I can add it to the right page.

A very interesting experiment for sure!

Beetroot tops producing new leaves
by: cathy donaldson

I cannot remember exactly when I posted my comment but the beetroot top in a little water has been producing new leaves ever since!

I found out that the tiny red-veined green leaves we get in pre- bagged Mesclum at our grocery stores is in fact baby beetroot leaves.

I always thought they were red "silver beet " or " rainbow lights" or "chard ". Whichever name you like to use for it.

I snip the leaves off at the base when they are about 1 1/4 inches high (and eat them in salad )....and I change the water daily. Always keeping it in about 1/4 inch of water on my window sill. It carries ON growing new leaves.

Today is 3rd March. I think it has been growing new leaves for 10 days at least. Watch this space and we will see how long it grows for. We are entering Autumn here in NZ.
