Keeping Alpacas in Canada

Keeping Alpacas in Canada

by Maria
(Manitoba, Canada)

We are thinking about keeping alpacas, how easy is it to look after them and would they be all right here in Manitoba Canada where our winters can get to -50?

Thanks in advance.

Maria

Keeping Alpacas in Manitoba, Canada

Hi Maria

Keeping Alpacas in Canada, or more specifically, Manitoba, is no problem at all, despite the cold winters. Alpacas come from the high altitudes of Peru where they are use to lots of snow and lots of low temperatures.

They are one of the easiest of livestock to keep, as long as you have more than one as they are pack animals that like company of other alpacas.

We have some information for you on our website called Alpaca Farming which will give you some background information to keeping and raising alpacas.

However, the best advice I can give you is to get in contact with other local farmers who keep alpacas in your area. You are very lucky to have a local club called the Manitoba Alpaca Club and they have a list of farms, farmers and their contacting details. The link is here: Manitoba Alpaca Club Members.

Good luck with your venture and we hope that have success in keeping your alpacas.
