New chicks

New chickens are all hatched. Yes all ten! All seem to be ok. Don't know what we have yet - I hope not too many cockerels.

I could see yellow spots on a few which is a good sign in cream Legbars that you have a cockerels but just happy they are all ok.

Mum is looking after them trying to get them to eat and drink. I've cleaned away all bits of shell and I'm just going to leave her to it.

That's absolutely wonderful news, Susan! I am sure that you are pleased that all 10 chicks have hatched and that they are doing so well. After all you went through with Edna, I am sure that you are looking forward to a new era with Dotty. I'm sure she will do a great job!

Momma hen dies

Sadly Dotty died on Tuesday leaving me to look after her chicks. The vet said it was the heat - it was too much for her.

There was plenty of food and water available. I'm so sad at the moment. Dotty was lovely hen and only 10 months old.

Oh, Susan! That is very sad. Unfortunately, heat and chickens don't go together. They suffer the heat dreadfully.

Even with plenty of water you can lose many chickens over a summer period if it gets too hot.

Really sorry to learn of Dotty this morning. I do hope that your 10 chicks will grow up just as nice as Dotty.
