The First Steps towards Homesteading

The First Steps towards Homesteading

by Yvette Victorino

When you began to do homesteading, what was your first priority?

Where did you begin to take the first steps to do this?

I would love to know how others began taking the first steps in the direction of homesteading, organic gardening, rural living?

Why we Homestead
by: Anonymous

My reasons for homesteading are to grow most of the food that we eat.

My husband and I live on one acre of land in the country and we have adopted two infants that were borne drug addicted. So we figure one of the best things we can do for them is to provide homegrown healthy food to help undue all the damage that has already been done in their little bodies.

We are beginners and have just planted our first small garden this year, which turned out well. We also installed a wood stove this year.

Next year our plan is to expand our garden and get some chickens for meat and eggs. We are trying to start slow and add on a little more each year so we do not become too overwhelmed.

Reasons for Homesteading
by: Countryfarm Lifestyles

Homesteading is very individual because many people go homesteading with very different purposes in mind.

For some the priority is just to have a constant supply of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, eggs, milk and meat. Most of the time the farm doesn't generate a lot of money, and more often than not, the homesteaders have a second job.

For others they want a full-blown business and are determined to make money from the homestead in some way through either herbs, flowers, honey etc.

For us the determination was that we wanted to have both; a business as well as access to our own organic food.

I am sure other people have different reasons for homesteading. Let's hear them.
