Here is a recipe for homemade watermelon moonshine.

1 1/4 large watermelons
10 peaches
1 1/4 cup chopped raisins
15 limes (juice only)
25 cups sugar
water to make up 5 gallons
wine or distiller's yeast

Extract the juice from watermelon and peaches, saving pulp.

Boil pulp in five quarts of water for 1/2 hour then strain and add water to extracted juice.

Cool to lukewarm then add water to make five gallons in total and all other ingredients except yeast to primary fermentation vessel.

Cover well with a cloth and add yeast after 24 hours.

Stir daily for 1 week and strain off raisins.

Fit fermentation trap, and set aside for 4 weeks before you bottle.

why moonshine?
by: Anonymous

Why do you keep calling this moonshine when it's not. It's really just a wine or maybe a mash for distilling. But so far you've just made wine.

***************************************************
The recipe was submitted by one of our readers with the title given.

So what is moonshine? Well, traditional moonshine is really any untaxed, home distilled alcohol made from a fermented corn mash.

And so, you are absolutely right. This "moonshine" recipe is really more a wine recipe as there is no distilling or any additional spirits involved so one couldn't even call it a brandy.

In the reader's defense, I have seen this recipe on the Internet on several other postings, and every time I have seen it, it has been called a "moonshine brandy".

Aluminum vs Stainless Pressure cookers for Moonshine
by: Anonymous

I may have just overlooked it but I don't see anywhere that it mentions that the pressure cooker has to be made of stainless steel or is it ok to use one made of aluminum?

****************************************************
Never use aluminum for cooking in general, making moonshine, or canning acidic fruits and vegetables. Aluminum is not good for you, and there is a chemical reaction that takes place when you use it for any of the above.

For moonshine, the traditional vessels used were copper. However, stainless steel today is second best.

All the best!

How much Yeast to Add to Watermelon Moonshine Recipe
by: Anonymous

You would normally add 3 ounces of yeast to 10 gallons of mash.

As this recipe is only 5 gallons I would start off using half of that amount and see how you go.

Good luck!

Moonshine and Alcohol
by: Clay

I think you're supposed to use that to make the alcohol, not to add alcohol to it!

***************************************************
Absolutely!

Don't add any more alcohol to this moonshine recipe. With the addition of the yeast, your fermentation will take place and your watermelon peach moonshine should be drinkable in about 4 weeks.

Homemade Watermelon Moonshine
by: Anonymous

Thank you for your homemade watermelon moonshine recipe.

I was wondering how much yeast needs to be added to the mixture as this is not mentioned in the recipe.
